Who We Are: About NASR
The National Action on Sugar Reduction (NASR) is a coalition of non-governmental organisations advocating for policy measures to tackle the health risks of consuming sugar-sweetened beverages, commonly known as soft drinks.
The purpose of the coalition is to guide advocacy efforts, as part of a multi-pronged effort towards the prevention and control of NCDs, that result in the passing of a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages in Nigeria.
The sugar-sweetened beverage tax advocacy project seeks to drive the passing and implementation of an SSB tax in Nigeria by:
- Raising public and policy maker buy-in through creating awareness of the link between sugar-sweetened beverages and non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure.
- Educating the public and policy makers on the health risks associated with consuming sugar-sweetened beverages to grow support for the proposed tax.
- Securing the buy-in of relevant government officials by presenting facts on the importance of the proposed tax.
- Mobilising support from the public and public health advocates to move policy makers to action.
